Obedience Classes

Family Pet Program

Beginner 1: Our 6 week Beginner 1 class is designed with the needs of the family and family pet in mind. Emphasis is on basic obedience commands such as sit, down, stay, come and walking on a loose leash. Using training techniques that motivate reliable behavior, students develop a well mannered and confident family pet.

Beginner 2: This 4 week continuation of the Beginner 1 class begins the process of extending the skills and behaviors learned in the Beginner 1 class. We add distance, duration and distraction to known exercises and teach the basics of heelwork.

Advanced Beginner/Pre-Novice: In our Advanced Beginner/Pre-Novice class dog and handler teams continue to build teamwork and hone the skills learned in Beginner 1 and 2. Additional skills developed include, finishes, distance recalls, formal sit and down stays, as well as basic Rally moves. This class is for those dog and handler teams that have completed Desert Dog Obedience Beginner 1 and 2 courses or with the approval of the class instructor. Students are encouraged to repeat this 6 week class.

Canine Good Citizenship: This 6 week class prepares dog and handler teams to pass the requirements for the American Kennel Club’s Canine Good Citizenship and Community Canine tests. The class, which is repeatable, focuses on the more advanced skills that make our canine companion great family pets and community members. Certification testing will be offered periodically.

My Dog’s Got Tricks: This fun, fast-paced 4 week class teaches the various techniques needed for learning basic tricks and lays the ground work for certifying your dog to be a Novice, Intermediate and Advanced trick dog. Certification process and testing for these levels included but not required. Some basic obedience skill training required for this class.

Competition Classes

Novice Competition: Our 6 week Novice class is designed to prepare the dog and handler team to compete for the AKC companion dog obedience title. Emphasis is on heelwork, formal recalls with finishes, stand for examination and group sit and down stay exercises. Obedience rules, different training methods and techniques, proofing and problem solving are discussed, explored and integrated into the teams training regime.

Open Competition: In this 6 week class the team learns the additional skills needed for the AKC companion dog excellent obedience title. These exercises include a positively based, reliable retrieve, drop on recall, high jump retrieve, broad jump and out of sight group stay exercises.

Rally Obedience: Our 6 week Rally class prepares the dog and handler for Novice, Advanced and Excellent levels of AKC Rally obedience. Classes include skill building exercises as well as course work.

Ring Procedure: Offered on a drop in basis for our students to practice their regular and Rally obedience trial performance in a practice ring situation. Students are offered critique and coaching to better their ring performance.

Private Instruction

Individual attention for you and your dog can be scheduled at your convenience. This is ideal for problem solving troublesome behaviors, puppies too young to bring to class or for those who desire additional training outside of the class environment. Call for an appointment.
